Despite Losing it on Finkle Street

by Samantha Priestley

Rachel Murdoch is living a lonely village life in the Lake District in the shadow of the memory of her grandparents. When she finds a young man who connects with her, she wonders if she may have at last found the new start she is looking for, despite the opposition she faces from his family.

But is Will hiding a secret, or is it just that the emotional holes in his life go to a depth that will stretch her beyond her limits? It is up to Rachel to put together the pieces of his past, and to decide whether she is still committed enough to stand by him.

This book launched in September 2007 and is available to order online or in bookshops.

Whose novels do we publish?

Any writer who has not had a novel published is eligible to submit their work to us for this project, which is our way of doing something to redress the imbalance stacked against first-time authors. We plan to repeat this process and find another new novelist in 2008.

Why has this book been chosen? Our editor replies:

Despite Losing it on Finkle Street is a beautifully narrated story, taking the reader well beyond the initially apparent theme of boy-meets-girl.

The book is never a simplistic fairy tale, but instead addresses the issue of real-life imperfections in a relationship, while the author maintains a gentle and flowing tone throughout that refuses to get depressed by the difficulties the characters face.

At the same time the reader has to join Rachel in trying to put together the pieces of Will's past, which innovatively adds a detective-style element to the novel, and ensures that it is not one-dimensional in genre.

The plot and narrative style both overflow with the quality and originality we are looking for, and the book will appeal to a broad readership.

The novel also sets a challenge to the reader by bringing up the issue of whether we can determine our own future against the power of fate. It walks this philosophical tightrope while at the same time reminding us that whatever our outlook, we need to equip ourselves to be able to deal with the down-to-earth realities of life at its hardest.
